SmartRM

You can share your content with your contacts in the Smart way in just a couple of clicks. Select one or more contacts in your contact list or Twitter list, right-click on them and select “Share your secret with” or “Twit your secret to” depending on which tab you are, as shown below.

In the next window select the file you want to share with the contacts you have selected. You may add or remove contacts from the table if you wish.

Say something about your secret, the people that will receive your protected file will be happy to know what it is.

You can now specify what the people you have selected can do with your file. In case of a PDF (as in the figure below) three options are possible: read only, print only, or read and print. If the source file is audiovisual content, only play will be possible.

Now it’s time for the conditions. You may specify the following options:

• Whether or not shall the people you have selected authenticate with the server before being able to play your content (recomended).
• A “Not before” date, until which the file cannot be opened.
• A “Not after” date, after which the file cannot be opened anymore by anyone.
• A number of days or hours or minutes after which the granted right will be denied, calculated from the first access to the file
• A maximum number of times the right can be exercised.

This is the last step: what shall happen when someone who is not among the people you have selected will try to open your file? By default this person will not be able to open it, but you may instead like the idea that other people may ask you the permission to open it.

If this is the case, then select the checkbox in the panel as shown below, and specify under which circumstances may third parties ask you the permission to open your file, in case they they find it somewhere. When this will happen, you will receive a notification asking you what to do, and you will decide yes or no.

You are done! The protected file has now been created. A new file named ‘the title you have given’.mp21 has been created. This is the file that you can share with your friends or colleagues instead of the original -unprotected- one. You can find it in the .SmartRMClient\content folder residing in your user home folder (e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\myUsername\.SmartRMClient\content).

You can send this file to the people you want by any means: as an email attachment, via your preferred messaging system, on a USB stick… or you can ask SmartRM to deliver the protected file to the people you have chosen.

Please note that the file will be encrypted and noone in SmartRM will be able to open it, only the people you have selected may do so, at the conditions you have specified. The selected contacts will receive an email or a notification via Twitter informing them about your secret. If they are online, or as soon as they get online, they will also receive a notification via SmartRM which will guide them to download the content and use it as you have specified.

You will see that any time someone plays a Smart content that you have created, your SmartRM software will inform you about that via a notification, like the one below.
